Configure AOL Kaspersky Active Virus Shield

The free Active Virus Shield (AVS) is an AOL branded version of the Kaspersky Anti-Virus program from which several features were removed to make a "lite" version. Anytime you install new software (such as CTI Navigator) on a computer with AVS, you should stop AVS from running during the installation. To stop AVS, right-click on the AVS icon in the Windows system tray and either click on "Pause Protection" or click on "Exit". Certain files in CTI Navigator need access to the Internet when CTI Navigator is running (such as the CTI Announcement.dll file). When AVS scans these files, it currently identifies them as "potentially dangerous riskware" and removes or quarantines them so they cannot run. According to AVS's support web site, programs it places in this category "are not malicious by nature and do not contain destructive code, but are potentially dangerous."

Unlike most security programs (including Kaspersky's own anti-virus/Internet Security programs), AOL's free AVS lacks a feature to allow users to specify trusted programs or program files (such as CTI Navigator) to be excluded from its scanning. Therefore, according to AOL's Support Team, to prevent AVS from removing or quarantining "remote access" functions (such as used by CTI Navigator), the entire category of "potentially dangerous software" must be disabled in the "Malware Categories" of AVS's Protection section. It is advisable to disable this function in AVS before installing CTI Navigator. To disable AVS from scanning for files it categorizes as "potentially dangerous":

Open the main window of Active Virus Shield
Click the Settings menu and go to the Protection section
In the Malware Categories section, uncheck the Potentially dangerous software: remote access utility, prank programs, jokes box. (Note: The Malware category "Spyware, adware, dialers box" can remain checked.)
Click the Apply and OK buttons.

You may not be able to login into CTI Navigator or use some functions if AVS (or Kaspersky) quarantines a CTI Navigator file. Use the Restore function in AVS/Kaspersky (or Copy function in Windows) to return any file that starts with "CTI" to the CTI Navigator folder. AVS quarantined files are typically stored at C:\Documents and Settings\All users\application data\avp6\quarantine. CTI Navigator program files are stored at C:\Program Files\Cti Navigator (or C:\Program Files (X86)\Cti Navigator in 64-bit Windows). If AVS/Kaspersky has removed (rather than quarantined) the CTIAnnouncement.dll file from CTI Navigator, you can download a replacement copy of just this file (so you do not have to totally re-install CTI Navigator) from www.ctimls.com/Downloads/CTIAnnouncement.dll.

To un-install AOL Active Shield:

Right-click on the AVS icon in the Windows system tray and click Exit to stop the program
Click Start > Programs > Active Virus Shield > Uninstall Active Virus Shield
Click Next on the main uninstall screen
Click Remove on the confirmation page to start the uninstall process
Click OK once the uninstall progress finishes
To complete the uninstall, your computer must be re-started. Click the Yes button to re-start immediately. Click the No button to re-start later.
