Windows Installer Issues

Programs that use the Windows Installer may produce an error during installation or un-installation due to a problem with the Installer itself. The following errors indicate that the Windows Installer is disabled, missing files, corrupted or installed incorrectly:

To fix Windows Installer errors and issues, ensure that it is current and functioning, not disabled, and registered. Close all programs in Windows and then proceed with the following steps in the order that they are listed to resolve the problem. After completing all the steps in each section, try again to install CTI Navigator before proceeding to the next section.

To ensure Windows Installer engine is Current and Functioning:

  1. Click Start
  2. Open Windows Command Prompt:
  3. Type MSIexec and press Enter
  4. If  the Windows Installer engine (MSI) is working, there will be no error message, and a separate screen will open to display the MSI version number.
  5. If your version is not at least 3 (version 5 in Windows 10), download the latest Windows Installer (see "Download Windows Installer" in the Related Articles below)
  6. Note any error message to use in further troubleshooting.

To ensure Windows Installer engine is Enabled:

  1. Click Start
  2. In Windows 10,
  3. In Windows 8, 7, Vista, or XP
  4. If the "Startup Type" box across from "Windows Installer" is set to Disabled, change it to Manual
  5. Click OK to close the Properties screen
  6. Right-click on the Windows Installer service and click Start. There should be no error message. Otherwise, note any error message to use in further troubleshooting.

To Register Windows Installer engine in Windows XP or Windows Server 2000:

  1. Click Start
  2. In Windows XP, click Run; in Windows Server 2000 click Accessories, and then click "Command Prompt"
  3. Type  msiexec /Unregister  in the Open box and then click OK
  4. Type  msiexec /Regserver  in the Open box and then click OK
  5. Restart Windows.

To Remove and Replace the Windows Installer files in Windows XP:

  1. Click Start
  2. In Windows XP, click Run
  3. Type  msiexec /Unregister  in the Open box and then click OK
  4. Open and Browse Windows Explorer to the location where Windows System files are installed on your computer's hard drive (typically  C:\Windows\System32)
  5. Rename the following files (for example by changing the extension to "old" as shown:

    Note 1: If Windows does not allow these files to be renamed in Windows Explorer (for example, displays error message to the effect that "c:\windows\system32\dllcache could not be found"), use the Rename command at the Command Prompt. Click Start > Run > type cmd in the Open box > click OK > type the Rename command using the following format with two spaces (one between Rename and C: and the second between OriginalName and NewName):

    Note 2: If Windows displays an error message to the effect that "c:\windows\system32\dllcache could not be found" when you use the rename command, open the Command Prompt (see above), type the following and press the enter key after each entry:

  1. Restart Windows. (The Windows Installer should automatically reconfigure itself.)
