No Send Button

At least one e-mail user account must be setup in your Windows e-mail program before its Send function is activated. Not having an e-mail account setup is the most common reason there is no Send button in an e-mail program.

If the Send button is missing, verify that:

  1. the Default e-mail program in Windows is correct (see set default in XP or Vista/7 below)
  2. an e-mail account has been configured in the default e-mail program (to confirm the account see note 1; to configure the account see Email Service Setup in related articles below)
  3. you can manually create and send email out of your default email program (in top menu, use Tools > Send if no button)
  4. the Toolbar (for buttons) is set to display in your e-mail program. In Outlook or Outlook Express select View > Toolbars > Standard or Standard Buttons. (For details see note 2 and note 3 below)
  5. in Outlook 2003 a default profile is setup. To create a default profile in Outlook, click Start > Control Panel > double-click the Mail icon > click Show Profiles >in the Mail dialog box, click Add > follow the prompts of the Inbox Setup Wizard.

Note 1: To check the e-mail account set up:

Note 2: To activate a missing standard toolbar in Windows e-mail programs, follow the instructions in the Help function of the program. Common steps are summarized below:

Note 3:  It is possible for the Send button to be visible when you use an e-mail program to Create the message, but not display when the program uses its default settings to open a message  to send that did not originate inside the e-mail program. See the steps above to configure or correct default settings in Windows e-mail programs.

Also verify that security is properly configured for your e-mail program (see the related article below appropriate for your e-mail program). For example, if you are sending reports as HTML links from the MLS but your e-mail security is set to block HTML e-mail, there may be nothing to send because the link was blocked.

When the Send button was previously available, the button may seem to disappear if the default e-mail program in Windows is changed to another program (that does not have an e-mail account set up), or if your Inbox has reached its limit. If your Inbox is full, delete all unneeded messages. Also, if Microsoft Office is installed on a computer, the installation of or updates to Office Outlook may set Windows to use Office Outlook as its default e-mail program (see note 4 below).

Note 4: If Office Outlook is installed on your computer but you do not intend to use it, you may want to uninstall the Outlook component of your Office package to prevent Office updates from repeatedly re-setting Windows' default e-mail program to Office Outlook. To remove components of Microsoft Office in Windows prior to Vista, use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel ; in the Windows Vista use "Programs and Features" in the Control Panel. To leave Office Outlook installed in Windows Vista but set another program as the default e-mail handler, see Change default e-mail program from Office Outlook in the related article below, "Using Windows Vista."

To verify or change which program is set as the default mail handler in Windows prior to Vista (such as Windows XP):

  1. Click Start > {Settings or} Control Panel
  2. Select Internet Options (under "Network and Internet" in the Category View)
  3. Select Programs tab > E-mail box
  4. Click the down arrow beside the e-mail box to change the default mail handler.

To set or change the default e-mail program in Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  1. Click Start > {Control Panel} > Default Programs
  2. Select "Set your default programs"
  3. Select the desired e-mail program from the list (on the left pane)
  4. Select “Set this program as default” (in lower right pane)
  5. Click the OK button (bottom right).

You may need to re-start Windows for the change to take effect. Also re-start Windows if the Send button is visible but does not function.

When the Send button stops working after toolbar buttons have been customized or a third-party add-in was inserted in Office Outlook, Outlook's OUTCMD.DAT configuration file may be damaged. In this case, close Outlook and rename or delete Outcmd.dat file. This will cause Outlook to recreate a configuration file (using its standard defaults). In Windows Vista, Outlook's configuration file is normally located at C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook. In earlier versions of Windows, Outlook's configuration file is located either at C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook, or at C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.
