Disable Un-necessary Windows Startup Items

To review or change which programs automatically startup in Windows 10 and 8:

• Open the Windows Task Manager
  • Windows 10: right-click on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and select Task Manager  
  • Windows 8:
    • In Tiles mode, type "Task Manager" and click on the resulting Task Manager app
    • In Desktop mode, right-click on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and select Task Manager 
• Click on the Startup tab. 
  • Programs with "Enabled" status are running
• Right-click on any program that you do not want to automatically startup with Windows and select Disable
  • To re-enable, right-click and select Enable. 

1. Any Startup item with a check mark beside it in the System Configuration Utility runs every time Windows starts up. These Windows startup items consume resources, slow-up startup time and may interfere with other programs. The only items that may be listed here that are necessary for Windows itself to open properly are Systray and Explorer (which may or may not show in the list) - although other items may beneficial. Items that you recognize that do not need to run every time Windows opens can be un-checked. Un-checked items remain installed and listed - just not automatically activated with Windows. Any un-checked item(s) can be re-activated by running msconfig again, re-checking the item(s), and re-starting Windows.  Windows will automatically notify you every time it opens that the Startup has been modified (unless you check on this notification screen not to be notified). It is usually advisable to minimize the number of Windows Startup items running (by un-checking all un-necessary items in the Windows startup). However, you may want to keep anti-virus and/or Internet connection utilities (if any are listed) checked so that your antivirus and Internet connection programs always start-up with Windows. 

2. If ccApp.exe is checked in your Windows Startup, un-check it before closing the Startup screen. If you are using Norton security products on this computer, add this ccApp.exe file under Programs Startup (instead of Windows Startup) as follows before you re-start Windows: 

   • Right-click Start > Open (or Open All Users)
   • Double-click Programs folder
   • Double-click StartUp folder
   • Right-click in an empty area of this window > Point to New > click Shortcut
   • Browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder
   • Click ccApp.exe file > OK
   • Click Next > Finish
   • Re-start Windows
   • Click “Do not show again”.
